TOWN OF WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - The former chief of the Town of Watertown Fire Department is accused of forging a firefighter’s name on a resignation letter.

State police arrested 48-year-old David Johnston last week on a count of second-degree tampering with public records.

According to troopers, the charge stems from an October 30 complaint.

Town of Watertown Fire District Public Information Officer Warren Day says the complaint was made by a firefighter who had resigned from the department.

He says Johnston allegedly misplaced the resignation letter, made a new one, and forged the firefighter’s signature.

According to Day, Johnston was given a choice of resigning or going before a disciplinary hearing.
