LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — More than a year has passed since the 2024 election, a decisive election both state and nationwide, which allowed voters to enact several additions to state law through ballot initiative.

Every election cycle, the people of Nebraska are allowed to petition their government through ballot initiatives to enact new laws, all according to the Nebraska State Constitution .

It’s a mechanism designed to let the people will their needs into law when the Unicameral struggles to find consensus. But some senators, like Sen. Danielle Conrad, worry the process is being eroded.

Since passing laws guaranteeing paid sick leave, ending school choice vouchers, increasing minimum wage and legalizing medical cannabis, each initiative has been targeted and tampered with by Nebrask
