The Food and Drug Administration announced on Nov. 13 that more moringa leaf powder products were added to a recall linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak.
Initially, the recall included all Member's Mark "Super Greens" dietary supplement powder products regardless of lot code or "best by date." The recall was expanded to include some products under the Food To Live brand: its Organic Moringa Leaf Powder and Organic Supergreens Powder Mix in a Nov. 13 update from the FDA.
The FDA issued a notice on Nov. 12 that one-kilogram boxes of Organic Moringa Leaf Powder sold online by Africa Imports had also been pulled due to salmonella contamination concerns.
The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating reports of Salmonella infections in multiple states, including cases in Virginia. Eleven people have fallen ill in the outbreak, and three have been hospitalized, according to the FDA.
The FDA said the investigative partners are investigating infections linked to a single lot of organic moringa leaf powder from Vallon Farm Direct PVT LTD of Jodhpur, India. Officials said the batch of moringa powder was supplied to multiple distributors across the United States.

Salmonella symptoms
According to the FDA, symptoms of salmonella infection usually occur within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. Symptoms, which include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, could last four to seven days.
"Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections," the FDA added.
