( NewsNation ) — Walmart CEO Doug McMillon is set to retire in January, the company announced Friday.

John Furner, head of the company’s U.S. operations, will assume the role Feb. 1.

During his tenure, McMillon embraced artificial intelligence, increased wages and launched a program for education-seeking employees.

In a statement, McMillon praised the Furner’s appointment, describing him as someone who will carry on a legacy of tech innovation.

“He’s uniquely capable of leading the company through this next AI-driven transformation,” McMillon said.
