East Lansing — Tight end Jack Velling had no idea as a freshman that by his senior year, his career that started at Oregon State would take him across the country to Michigan State. Nor did running back Elijah Tau-Tolliver, playing his final year at MSU after four years at Sacramento State.

The days of seniors playing four or five seasons for a program before graduating have faded, in their place the rise of a nomadic player pool through the transfer portal.
