John Beam, a mainstay of the football coaching ranks in the East Bay who was profiled in the Netflix series “Last Chance U,” died from gunshot wounds after he was shot Thursday at Laney College in Oakland, California, authorities said today.

The Oakland Police Department today identified the gunman as a 27-year-old man, who authorities said was arrested early in the day at a Bay Area Rapid Transit station in San Leandro, California.

It was not immediately clear what had prompted the shooting, but law enforcement officials said at a news conference today that it had been a targeted attack and that the two men knew each other.
