MINNEAPOLIS — Grand Rapids senior Jaxon Rabbers caught a pass on the sideline late in the fourth quarter and spun out of a defender’s tackle in the Class AAAA semifinal against Kasson-Mantorville Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
He ran in for a 72-yard touchdown with 1 minute, 58 seconds remaining in the game. The score set off a sequence where the Thunderhawks rallied from 16 points down, scored two touchdowns and recovered two onside kicks.
The rally fell short, though, when Logan McNear was intercepted on a potential game-tying two-point conversion, and the Thunderhawks fell 16-14.
Even after the failed conversion, Grand Rapids recovered a second onside kick attempt, and McNear couldn’t find the end zone a third time, but coach Greg Spahn was proud of the way his team responded.
