WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - When SNAP benefits didn’t go out as scheduled on Nov. 1, many struggled to buy food for their families. Grocery stores took a hit too, with some receiving 20 to 30 percent of their revenue from SNAP benefits
“SNAP is a huge part of the success of grocery stores, especially small, independently-owned grocery stores,” Jeremy Wright, who co-owns several Save a Lot grocery stores in West Virginia with Scott Wamsley, told WSAZ.
“Without that boost of sales from SNAP at the beginning of the month, a lot of people in the grocery store business really struggled,” he continued.
When SNAP benefits were restored in West Virginia on Thursday afternoon, shoppers flocked to grocery stores - many able to purchase food for the first time in weeks.
