Flight cuts at Indianapolis International Airport will be halved over the weekend thanks to a Nov. 14 federal directive .
The Federal Aviation Administration required "high-volume" airports, including Indianapolis, to reduce their flight schedules beginning Nov. 7. By the time the government shutdown ended on Nov. 12, airports were required to cut 6% of their flights.
That rate will be decreased to 3% beginning at 6 a.m. on Nov. 15, the FAA said Friday.
The flight reduction was ordered in response to a nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers in an already constrained system thrown further into crisis by the longest-ever government shutdown. Air traffic controllers work without pay during shutdowns, prompting many to call out sick and earn a paycheck by working other jobs.
