In the past two years, I have gained tremendous respect for U.S. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. When he was first elected, I was skeptical and even questioned his fitness for duty. I have since gained a world of respect for him as both a senator and a person ( “Fetterman is hospitalized after falling near his house in Pennsylvania,” Nov. 13).

Senator Fetterman was not afraid to open up about his personal struggle with depression and became an inspiration for those of us who share this terrible plight. He is also the type of legislator we need more of — much like former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and former U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia — those who are willing to buck their party and make common-sense decisions and compromise for the overall good of their country and state
