BAILEYVILLE, Maine — A temporary shutdown at one of Maine’s largest mills is creating uncertainty for hundreds of workers and residents in Washington County.
Woodland Pulp in Baileyville will pause operations later this month through December 17, citing a challenging pulp market, lower demand, and the impact of recent tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber.
"We're experiencing a very challenging pulp market," Scott Beal, spokesperson for Woodland Pulp, said. "Demand is down somewhat, and the pricing has certainly followed that."
Beal specifically cites a recent 10% tariff increase in October that forced the mill to stop accepting softwood lumber from Canada, disrupting normal operations.
