AUSTIN, Texas — Jury deliberations in the trial of an Austin police officer accused of deadly conduct started Friday.

After over five hours of deliberations, the jury had requested to hear back some testimony and was then dismissed for the weekend by Judge Karen Sage.

Jurors will have to determine whether the actions taken by Officer Daniel Sanchez were justified in the on-duty shooting death of Rajan Moonesinghe on Nov. 15, 2022.

On that night, a 911 caller reported a man standing outside with a rifle, who was later identified as Moonesinghe. According to prosecutors, Moonesinghe believed someone was inside the house. He had fired two shots into an open door as officers arrived, which prompted Sanchez to shoot him.
