Gov. Larry Rhoden is opting South Dakota in to a federal school choice tax-credit program even though the rules of the initiative are still being written.
Rhoden announced the decision to media at Nov. 14 press conference, adding the program was created under President Donald Trump's " One Big, Beautiful Bill Act ."
Otherwise known as the Educational Choice for Children Act , the program allows individual taxpayers in participating states to donate up to $1,700 to a scholarship granting organization — a state-approved, federally recognized nonprofit that grants educational scholarships to eligible students in South Dakota — and receive an equivalent amount in a credit on their taxes. SGOs are allowed to keep 10% of the donations for administrative costs.
