PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Leticia Jacobo was set to be released from an Iowa jail after serving time for a traffic violation. But when her mother went to take care of her release paperwork on Monday, a jail worker told her she wouldn’t be able to take her daughter home on Tuesday as planned.

“They stated to her that she was to be released at 12 midnight but was not going to be released because they had an ICE detainer on her,” Jacobo’s aunt, Maria Nunez, said.

An ICE detainer even though the 24-year-old was born and grew up in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian community before she moved to Des Moines.

“She had the green jumpsuit on that she was recognized as an immigrant when she is a Native American,” Nunez said.
