A homeless man has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted an elderly woman who was driving home from church in Bridgeport in September, police said.

Bridgeport police said the incident happened near the intersection of Barnum Avenue and Central Avenue on the East Side of the city on Sept. 16.

An 81-year-old woman was allegedly punched in the face and body, and the man who did it took off, police said.

Authorities said the woman reported being assaulted on her way home from a church meeting. She told police she had driven by a man and woman standing in the street, and she heard the woman scream as she drove by.
