(KRON) — A man is dead and a 5-year-old girl is missing after a series of large waves swept a family into the Pacific Ocean at Garrapata State Beach along Highway 1 in Monterey County at about 12:50 p.m. Friday.

An off-duty State Parks lifeguard found the family in distress near the shoreline. The man was attempting to rescue his 5-year-old daughter after she was swept away by 15 to 20-foot waves, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said.
