BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The city of Irondale is making progress on a brand-new fire station designed to meet the needs of its growing population.
The facility is being built across from the Wood Fruitticher grocery store.
The $8.1 million project will span about 13,000 square feet when complete and will house at least eight firefighters.
20 years ago, the city inherited the former East Jefferson Fire Station, but officials say it no longer meets the department’s needs. Irondale Mayor James D. Stewart says the building is outdated and can’t accommodate their new fire engine.
“It’s all about protecting your citizens, and to be able to do that, you have to have the facilities to be able to provide that kind of protection,” Stewart said. “We have brand-new equipment and we wanted to
