ST. PAULS — The St. Pauls Bulldogs survived a thrilling contest against the West Carteret Patriots, winning 46-32 to advance in the NCHSAA 5A state playoffs. There were many offensive highlights for the Bulldogs in this contest. The coaches, however were most happy to survive and advance.

“We’ve been stuck in the first round for the last three seasons,” St. Pauls coach Mike Setzer said. “It’s been heartbreaking to do well every year and go out in the first round so getting that monkey off our back is super important for our program.”

One of the most thrilling plays of the game was when wide receiver Jakhi Purcell returned a punt for a touchdown to give No. 6 St. Pauls a 30-20 lead early in the third quarter. This was a moment that electrified the entire St. Pauls crowd.
