FAIRMONT — The Lumberton boys basketball team won Friday in David Strother’s head coaching debut, beating Fairmont 61-42 to open the season at Michael D. Baker Gymnasium.
Lumberton (1-0) held an 18-16 lead over Fairmont (0-1) to end the first quarter and led 29-24 at halftime before the Pirates pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Tornadoes 19-11 in the period to take a 48-35 lead. Lumberton held a 13-7 fourth-quarter scoring advantage to secure the win.
Lumberton’s Nate Lawson led all scorers with 15 points. Kaden McLean had 13 points with seven rebounds for the Pirates, Amare Jones scored 12 points and Chris Hammonds added 10 points.
Jacob McCollum led Fairmont with 12 points and Ayden Cummings and Jason Hayes each scored seven points, with Hayes adding five rebound
