PHOENIX — A last-minute provision folded into the federal spending bill that reopened the government this week could have sweeping consequences for the nation's booming hemp market, including those businesses in Arizona.

The spending bill, passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump on Wednesday, includes new federal restrictions on THC levels in hemp-derived products . The rules do not affect recreational or medical cannabis, which are already illegal under federal law, but instead target CBD and hemp items that contain trace amounts of THC.

Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes said many of these intoxicating edibles and drinks being sold look identical to cannabis products found in dispensaries, yet can be purchased almost anywhere.
