After its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is preparing to start commercial flight operations from December 25. While a formal announcement from the airport authorities is awaited, Akasa Air has already opened reservations and become one of the first carriers to launch services from the new facility.
Developed over 1,160 hectares by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL), the airport is planned with two runways and a projected handling capacity of nine crore passengers annually in the long term. Combined with the existing Mumbai airport, the city’s total passenger capacity is expected to reach 145–150 million once NMIA is fully operational.
