The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has responded to its significant defeat in the recent Bihar Assembly elections, stating that the "ups and downs are inevitable" in the journey of public service. This statement came a day after the election results were announced, marking one of the party's worst performances in history.
Led by Tejashwi Yadav, the RJD managed to secure only 25 seats out of 243, a decline from previous elections. The party described itself as the "party of the poor" and emphasized its commitment to continue voicing their concerns. In a post on the social media platform X, the RJD stated, "Public service is an unceasing process, an endless journey! No sorrow in defeat, no arrogance in victory!"
The RJD-led Mahagathbandhan alliance, which includes the Congress party, collectively won 35 seats, with Congress dropping from 19 to just 6 seats. In contrast, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a historic victory, winning 202 seats. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 89 seats, followed closely by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) with 85 seats, and Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) securing 19 seats.
Despite the defeat, Tejashwi Yadav retained his seat in Raghopur, defeating BJP's Satish Kumar by over 14,500 votes. The RJD also noted that it had the highest vote share among the opposition parties, receiving 22.76% of the votes, surpassing the BJP's 20.90% and JD(U)'s 18.92%.
The election, held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, saw a record voter turnout of 67.13%, the highest since 1951. Following the results, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed surprise at the outcome, citing concerns over the fairness of the election process and calling for a review to strengthen democracy.
As the RJD reflects on its defeat, it remains committed to its foundational principles and the welfare of the poor in Bihar.
