Calyn Saindon of Green Bay says that her business, Yellow Horse Hat Co. , was born when she burned her first cotton hat. Also known as hat pyrography, hat burning refers to using a heated tool to burn designs onto hats.

She said, “I burned right through my first hat in about 30 seconds and I thought there has to be a way to do this successfully. I needed better quality tools and products and once I got started, I thought I really like doing this.”

She worked on perfecting the process, and when she gave away a few hats, the response was always the same, “You should do this as a business.”

Having come from a family of entrepreneurs, that was all the encouragement needed. The first hat had been made in 2023, and less than a year later, she had signed up for her first show — a vendor and
