Bihar’s newly elected 18th Legislative Assembly has opened with a striking statistic: nine out of every ten MLAs are millionaires, a steep rise from the previous House.
An analysis of candidate affidavits shows that 218 of the 243 legislators (90%) possess assets worth over Rs 1 crore, compared with 194 (81%) in the last Assembly, a 9% increase in just five years.
Equally striking is the surge in personal wealth. The average asset value has almost doubled, rising from Rs 4.32 crore in 2020 to Rs 9.2 crore now, according to a joint assessment by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Election Watch.
