The Fargo School Board’s wonky approach to naming a new elementary school rejected one person who stood out on the initial list of 29. Steve Stark, who died about a year ago, exceeds the criteria for being honored by the school district. Steve was not only a world-class editorial cartoonist, thespian and historical interpreter, he also was an educator in the best iteration of the term. He was known as “Mr. History” for good reasons, among them his lively history lessons in elementary schools.
(Disclaimer: Steve and I were best friends from the first year my family moved to Fargo. We worked together at The Forum for a long time. For more than 30 years our families were sometimes as one – at holidays, weddings, dining out and day-to-day life. I was at his bedside a few hours before he die
