Kelowna’s population will grow much more slowly than was forecast just a year ago, city councillors will hear Monday.

An updated forecast from BC Statistics projects a population of 204,000 by 2046, well down from a previous estimate from the government agency of 244,000. Currently, 166,000 people are estimated to live in Kelowna.

The downward revision in the 20-year population growth rate, from 46 per cent to 24 per cent, is based in large part on the federal government’s decision to curb immigration to Canada.

The federal government announced earlier this month that it would reduce temporary resident admissions from 637,650 this year to 370,000 by 2027.

“I think Canadians understand that we had reached our capacity - or sometimes even exceeded our capacity - to welcome (newcomers),”
