India bowling coach Morne Morkel has refused to put Shubman Gill’s ‘neck stiffness’ down to his extra workload in recent months, saying it was likely ‘just a bad night’s sleep’. According to PTI , Gill was ‘stretchered out in an ambulance’ to a hospital in Kolkata, with his neck in a cervical collar, hours after he had to retire hurt while batting at the Eden Gardens in the first of two Tests against South Africa.

He didn’t look comfortable while batting and retired hurt on four after facing just three balls, walking off clutching his neck. Initially, the Board of Control for Cricket in India called it ‘neck spasms’, saying that he was being monitored. But more concerns have been raised since it was confirmed he had been taken to a hospital.
