ATLANTA — The man accused of traveling to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport intending to commit a mass shooting pleaded not guilty in federal court on Friday.

The suspect, Billy Joe Cagle, who also waived a formal reading of the indictment against him, is being held without bond after the alleged shooting plot was thwarted by police on scene at the airport earlier this month.

As in previous hearings , Friday's proceeding also touched on his current and past mental health evaluations. Federal prosecutors have said that Cagle's past mental health history includes him suffering from both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, while also not complying with his medications and having a history of substance abuse challenges.
