Sullivan, N.Y. - A house in Madison County was severely damaged by a fire on Saturday, but a person in the house and five dogs got out safely.
At about 11:57 a.m., firefighters arrived at 8520 Whitelaw Road in the town of Sullivan to find the front of a 1-1/2 story house fully-engulfed in flames, according to Bridgeport Fire Department Chief Jim Ostrowski.
Firefighters found fire concentrated in the front and center section of the house when they got inside, Ostrowski said.
It took crews from eight surrounding fire departments about an hour and 40 minutes to extinguish the fire, he said.
Crews had difficulty extinguishing the fire because there were no fire hydrants nearby and they had to bring water in, he said.
Firefighters were still working on putting out hotspots at around 2 p.m.
