Danielle Mittereder, a transgender TSA officer at Dulles International Airport, has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the Department of Homeland Security of violating civil rights law with a new policy that bars transgender officers like her from conducting security pat-downs and prohibits her from using TSA restrooms that match her gender identity.

The TSA implemented the policy in February, citing compliance with President Donald Trump's executive order defining sex as strictly male or female. The policy also appears to be aligned with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, instructing airlines to disregard travelers' "X" gender passports .
