DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings were cruising midway through the second period, scoring three goals in less than five minutes to take command, making it look easy.
They ended up with just one point, however, squandering a three-goal lead and losing to the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 on Mattias Samuelsson’s goal at 1:05 of overtime.
The Sabres killed a penalty for too many men on the ice with 2:33 remaining in regulation.
Samuelsson whipped a shot past John Gibson after Tage Thompson leveled Alex DeBrincat and took the puck.
The Red Wings (10-7-1) are 1-4-1 in their past six. The Sabres are 6-8-4. Colten Ellis, making his third career start, has defeated Detroit twice.
