Frankenmuth's Holz Brücke covered bridge wasn't built during the time of horse-drawn carriages. But it took two sets of hooves to put it in place.
The Zehnder brothers, William "Tiny" and Eddie, had the Holz Brücke, German for wooden bridge, built because they needed an easier way to access their land on the other side of the Cass River. But in doing so, they added another piece of charm to an already endearing town. Even the name, Holz Brücke, is charmingly simple.
The brothers began discussions about building a span in 1962 but didn't take action until 1977, when Tiny Zehnder read about a covered bridge builder from New Hampshire named Milton Graton.
