OMAHA, Neb. —

Gun violence in a North Omaha target area has dropped by 70%, according to local nonprofit YouTurn. The group says new funding will help it continue that progress.

The Omaha community violence intervention organization received a $100,000 grant from the Everytown Community Safety Fund, part of $2.67 million being awarded nationwide.

YouTurn Assistant Director Stewart Giddings said the support comes at a critical time.

“We’ve been receiving and awarded this grant for a number of years from Everytown,” Giddings said.

This year, federal public safety funding from the Department of Justice was cut.

“The way the politics work in the country right now, we obviously are affected by that as well,” Giddings said.

He said the Everytown grant helps relieve financial pressure.
