Jack Della Maddalena’s UFC welterweight championship reign is over, with Dagestani wrestling star Islam Makhachev claiming a unanimous decision victory to become the promotion’s 12th double champion.
Makhachev (28-2) simply out-grappled Della Maddalena (18-3) for five rounds at the iconic Madison Square Garden on Sunday morning (AWST) to claim gold.
The 34-year-old vacated the lightweight championship after taking all before him and went up a division to join the illustrious list of UFC double champions.
For Della Maddalena, it ends an incredible 18-fight winning streak which dates back more than a decade.
