The Post-Gazette’s Nov. 2 editorial, “In spending on TV deal during shutdown, Pittsburgh Public Schools embarrasses itself once again,” selectively presents facts, omits key context and employs language unworthy of a publication that claims to value accuracy.

Contrary to the editorial’s implication, in authorizing spending on a longstanding communications deal with WPXI-TV, PPS did not circumvent its own spending freeze, enacted in response to the state budget impasse. The Board’s October 22 vote did not authorize immediate spending. Rather, it approved the continuation of previously planned communications work, to begin only after the freeze is lifted.

This was a prudent step to ensure that, once the state budget is resolved, the District can move forward without delay in communicating
