Shabana Mahmood will set out a major overhaul of the UK’s asylum system on Monday, introducing measures that will reform refugee status, settlement rights, financial support and how human rights protections apply to removal cases.

The Home Secretary says the current framework is struggling to cope with rising demand , with 111,084 asylum applications made in the year to June – the highest number since records began in 2001.

In an interview with The Sunday Times , Mahmood said that “illegal migration is tearing our country apart”, adding: “If we don’t sort this out, I think our country becomes much more divided.” New Feature
