A forbidden relationship between a convicted rapist and a prison officer has raised serious concerns about systemic failures within the prison service.

Cherrie‐Ann Austin‐Saddington, formerly an officer at HMP The Verne in Dorset, embarked on an affair with prisoner Bradley Trengrove that would destroy her career, result in criminal conviction and prompt grave questions about how boundary breaches happen inside British prisons .

During the summer of 2022, whilst on duty at a men's prison, Austin‐Saddington, 29, was handed what appeared to be an innocent magazine from Trengrove. However, concealed within its pages was a piece of paper containing the number of his illicit mobile phone.
