It’s unknown exactly how many University of Colorado Boulder students were impacted by the disruption of SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown.
But CU Boulder’s Basic Needs Center does know that 25% of students who responded to a 2024 survey reported facing food insecurity.
“We know there’s a high need,” Basic Needs Center Associate Director Eldred Foster said.
The Basic Needs Center at CU Boulder helps students access essential resources, including food and housing. The Buff Pantry, CU Boulder’s on-campus food pantry, helps all students facing food insecurity, including those who qualify for SNAP, Foster said. But since students don’t report their SNAP status to the university, it’s hard to know how many students lost food access during the shutdown.
