An inmate being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning died after suffering a medical emergency, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Deputies from the correctional facility were alerted of an inmate having a medical emergency in the transportation area around 6:20 a.m. Thursday, according to a news release. Custody staff and jail medical personnel administered emergency medical assistance and the inmate was later transported to a hospital by paramedics, the release stated.

The inmate’s health continued to decline while at the hospital, and staff performed life-saving measures, but he was ultimately pronounced dead on Friday.

The inmate was identified as 61-year-old Michael Dupas of Perris.
