A Calgary man has died and his five-year-old daughter is missing after they were swept into the Pacific Ocean by a large wave at Garrapata State Beach in California. The incident occurred on November 14, when 39-year-old Yuji Hu was at the beach with his wife and two children.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, a wave estimated to be between 15 and 20 feet high pulled Hu's daughter into the water. In an attempt to rescue her, both Hu and his wife were also swept away. While Hu's wife managed to return to shore, Hu was pulled from the ocean by a beachgoer and an off-duty park officer. They attempted to resuscitate him until paramedics arrived.
Hu was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife was treated for mild hypothermia and is in stable condition. Their two-year-old child was unharmed during the incident.
The search for the missing five-year-old girl has been extensive but was suspended after a large-scale effort that included the U.S. Coast Guard, local fire services, divers, and a helicopter. The sheriff’s office reported that the girl was last seen wearing a white shirt.
California State Parks personnel will continue to search the shoreline and accessible areas on foot. A spokesperson for the family has requested privacy during this challenging time.
Garrapata State Beach is known for its scenic cliffs and two beach fronts, making it a popular destination along the Monterey coast. The tragedy has drawn attention to the dangers of ocean waves, especially in areas with steep cliffs and unpredictable surf conditions.
