James Pickens Jr., who has played Dr. Richard Webber on “Grey’s Anatomy” for two decades, has revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year.
The 73-year-old actor told Black Health Matters that elevated PSA levels detected during his January physical led to the diagnosis. Because prostate cancer runs in his family, Pickens said he started getting tested at age 41.
“It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family,” Pickens said. “My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it.”
An MRI showed what his doctor described as “something suspicious.” A biopsy confirmed a tumor, and a PET scan revealed the cancer had not spread beyond the prostat
