OTTAWA — Mi'kmaq Hereditary Chief Stephen Augustine is asking for the public's help in locating his ceremonial jacket, which he lost at Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport on November 10. The jacket holds significant personal and cultural value, featuring medals from the Order of Canada, the King Charles III Coronation Medal, and the Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medal.
The jacket is a replica of regalia originally gifted to British Army Captain Henry Dunn O'Halloran by the Mi'kmaq in the 1840s. It was crafted by Augustine's late ancestor and represents a deep connection to his family's history and traditions. Augustine described the loss of the jacket as feeling like losing a family member, emphasizing its importance as both a ceremonial item and a symbol of his heritage.
In his plea, Augustine is urging anyone who may have seen the jacket or knows its whereabouts to come forward. He hopes to recover the item so it can be returned to its rightful place. The search for the jacket continues as Augustine seeks to reconnect with this vital piece of his identity and family legacy.
