The Tennessee Volunteers have dismissed defensive back Boo Carter from the team, according to On3's Pete Nakos. Carter is no longer listed in their roster, and he took to social media on Sunday afternoon to say his season was over due to an injury and that he would be entering the transfer portal.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to thank The University of Tennessee Coaches, administrators and fans for a wonderful 2 years," he said. "Unfortunately my season has been cut short due to injury. I have decided to enter the transfer portal and I am excited about the opportunities going forward!"

Carter had an excellent freshman season for the Volunteers, earning SEC All-Freshman Team honors at defensive back and as a punt returner. However, their relationship deteriorated over the offseason, while he was able to work his way back into his coach's good graces, the issues carried over into the season.

He did not play on defense in their game against the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 9, only returning punts. He also did not appear in last week's game against New Mexico State. Head coach Josh Heupel was asked about his absence after the game, revealing that Carter was not at the stadium.

"At the end of the day, there’s a standard you’ve got to meet to be in that locker room," he said. "He was not out on the field with us. … That will be my last response to anything related to that for right now.”

Carter played in eight games in 2025, recording 25 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, three pass breakups, and three forced fumbles. He averaged 13.2 yards per return on 11 attempts. He will have two seasons of eligibility at his next school.
