A 21-year-old Kula woman became Maui County’s 16th traffic fatality of the year after crashing her 1998 Toyota 4Runner in Kula Saturday evening.
The Maui Police Department said the motorist, whose name was not immediately released, was traveling west on Holopuni Road at about 5:15 p.m. when she lost control while negotiating a left bend in the roadway. The vehicle crossed the double solid-yellow centerline and the driver over-corrected in an attempt to return to the westbound lane, police said. The 4Runner then crossed back over the lane into the dirt shoulder, where it began to roll and re-enter the roadway.
The driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Police said she not wearing a seat belt and that speed is considered a factor in the crash. The involvement of alcohol
