Tseten Tashi Bhutia conferred ‘Kongchen Dorjee Award’

GANGTOK,: The Sikkim Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association (SILTA) presented its inaugural “Kongchen Dorjee Award” to socio-political activist Tseten Tashi Bhutia today in a ceremony held in Gangtok.

The newly-constituted award honours individuals who have who have “passionately served Sikkim and its society for several years,” the association said.

At a ceremony marked by traditional rituals, chief guest Labi Sangay, a Bongthing (Lepcha shaman), performed ritual before presenting Bhutia with the award and sacred ceremonial objects.

Bhutia initially worked in government service as an engineer in 1984 before he moved into politics and social work, taking on the role of convenor of Sikkim Bhutia Lepcha Apex Committee (SI
