CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein on Sunday sharply criticized the tactics of federal immigration agents operating in Charlotte over the weekend, saying masked officers in unmarked cars were racially profiling residents and targeting American citizens, undermining rather than enhancing public safety.

In a video statement, Stein said his administration had been in regular contact with state and local law enforcement as U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents conducted sweeps across the state's largest city. While acknowledging that "everyone wants to be safe in their communities," the Democratic governor condemned what he described as aggressive enforcement methods.
