Chennai: A low-pressure system developing over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lankan coast has intensified, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai to issue an Orange Alert for seven districts in Tamil Nadu, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Monday.
The system, which formed on Sunday morning, remains active in the same region. Forecast models suggest it will move west-northwestwards in the next 24 hours, bringing widespread rainfall across several districts.
In the 24 hours ending Monday morning, Thirparappu in Kanyakumari district recorded the highest rainfall at 6 cm, followed by 4 cm in Sembanarkoil (Mayiladuthurai district) and 3 cm in Parangipettai (Cuddalore district).
