A preliminary investigation by officials has pointed to a volatile mix of liquid explosives as the likely trigger that detonated the 360 kg of ammonium nitrate being examined inside Srinagar's Nowgam Police Station last week, according to sources familiar with the probe.
Early findings suggested the blast, which killed 9 personnel, occurred when the final set of seized boxes was being sampled.
With the Jaish-linked module unable to procure standard detonators capable of generating the shockwave needed to activate an ammonium nitrate device, they allegedly turned to a liquid combination of hydrogen peroxide and acetophenone . This mix, typically used as a secondary trigger, is now suspected to have set off the larger cache stored for forensic examination.
