The Assam government has imposed a sweeping ban on the inter-district movement of live pigs and halted the sale of pork in seven districts, following a sharp escalation in African swine fever (ASF) cases.

Since January 2025, ASF has continued to spread, prompting urgent containment measures. More than 14,500 pigs have been culled this year, and over 3,000 have died due to the virus, signalling one of the most serious outbreaks the state has witnessed since ASF was first detected in 2020, says an Indian Express report.
