Chennai: With heavy rains reviving across Tamil Nadu and catchment areas receiving copious inflows, the state Water Resources Department on Monday began releasing surplus water from three key reservoirs supplying drinking water to Chennai.
A total of 5,400 cusecs of water was discharged from the Chembarambakkam, Poondi, and Puzhal reservoirs as a precautionary measure, an official said.
The release from Chembarambakkam Lake was increased from 600 to 1,200 cusecs, while discharge from Poondi reservoir was raised to 3,000 cusecs from 2,500 cusecs. Around 1,200 cusecs were released from Puzhal Lake.
Other major reservoirs supplying water to the city include Cholavaram, Kannankottai Thervoy Kandigai, and Veeranam.
